| Ram Nath Kovind was born on October 1, 1945 in Kanpur Dehat District, Uttar Pradesh, India, to Maiku Lal and Kalawati Devi. His father was a farmer and their family was humble. Their family belonged to the Dalit community, a historically oppressed group in India. We do not know much about his early years or his schooling. After graduating from high school, he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree before obtaining his law degree from Kanpur University. He aspired to become an IAS officer and moved to Delhi to prepare for the Civil Services Review. |

| Ram Nath Kovind's legal career has been successful. In 1971, he was also registered as a lawyer with the Delhi Bar Council. He was a central government attorney at the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979, before becoming a permanent central government lawyer at the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.During that time in 1978, he became an attorney-on-record of the Supreme Court of India. At that time, he was also the personal assistant to the Prime Minister of India at the time, Morarji Desai . A native of the Dalit community, Kovind was very sensitive to issues of social justice. Crossed for the rights and cause of the weaker sections of society, he provided free legal aid to the oppressed groups of society, especially women and the underprivileged, under the Free Legal Aid Society of New Delhi. |
