Kalpana Chawla Biography & Biodata | ||
| Kalpana Chawla was born on 17-03-1962 in Karnal, Haryana State, India. She was an astronaut, engineer and American scientist of Indian origin. After her first successful mission, she was again chosen for her second mission in 2000. Unfortunately, due to some technical flaws, the mission was delayed. In 2003, she boarded the Space Shuttle for mission STS-107. She and six other crew members were part of the unfortunate mission. |

| Kalpana Chawla came from a very humble background and was educated in Karnal. She graduated in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh. Subsequently, she moved to the United States and obtained her Masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Texas in the United States. She completed her second master's degree and also earned a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Boulder, University of Colorado. Since then she has been employed at NASA. She joined NASA Astronaut Corp. and was selected for her inaugural flight in 1998. On her first flight, she traveled approximately 10.4 million kilometers. So, she created the story by becoming the first Indian woman to travel. She was only the second Indian since Rakesh Sharma to travel in a spaceship. She parked the dysfunctional satellite, Spartan. |
