| Preity Zinta was born on January 31, 1975 and is an Indian actress. She has appeared in Hindi Bollywood films, as well as in Telugu, Punjabi and English films. After graduating in English Honors and Criminal Psychology, Zinta made her acting debut in Dil Se .. in 1998, followed by a role in Soldier in the same year. These performances earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Beginning, and she was later recognized for her role as a single adolescent mother in Kya Kehna. She then established a career with a variety of character types; her film roles with her screen character were credited with contributing to a change in the concept of a Hindi movie heroine, and earned her several accolades. |

| In 1997, Zinta met Shekhar Kapur when she accompanied a friend to an audition, and was asked if she would audition too. Seeing her hearing, Kapur insisted she become an actress. She was originally scheduled to make her screen debut in Kapur's Tara Rum Pum Pum in front of Hrithik Roshan, but the shoot was canceled. Kapur later recommends her for director Mani Ratnam's Dil Se ... Zinta often remembers that when she joined the film industry, her friends teased her that she "wore white saris and danced in the rain," motivating her to play different roles. Zinta started filming Kya Kehna of Kundan Shah, whose release was delayed until 2000. The delay of another movie, Soldier, meant that her first outing was Dil Se .. in front of Shahrukh Khan and Manisha Koirala. She was introduced as Preeti Nair, a middle-class Delhi girl and Khan's fiancée. The film was considered an unusual launch for a newcomer, as his role required only 20 minutes of screen time. However, she was finally noticed for her role, especially for the live character she played. Her scene with Khan, in which she asked him, "Are you a virgin?", Became famous, and her portrait earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She played her first lead role in the Soldier action drama, a commercial hit of the year. |
