Indira Gandhi Biography & Biodata
Indira Gandhi was born November 19, 1917 in Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and Smt. Kamala Nehru in Allahabad, India. Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the main actors in India's struggle for the liberation of the British Raj. He later became the first prime minister of independent India. Indira Gandhi was the only child of her parents and grew up on her family property in Allahabad called Anand Bhavan. His childhood days were very lonely, with his father staying away because of his commitments to political activities or confinement in prison. Her mother often fell ill and had to be bedridden from time to time; she eventually died very young with tuberculosis. The letters were his only way of contact with his father. |
Indira Gandhi Career
From 1947 to 1964 she remained the chief of staff of the Jawaharlal Nehru administration, which was highly centralized. In 1964 she was elected as a member of Rajya Sabha. She was Minister of Information and Broadcasting under the government headed by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. After the untimely death of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi was appointed Prime Minister of India in January 1966. She held that position until 1977. During this term, she showed exceptional political skills. The term also experienced internal dissent in the party, leading to a split in 1969. As prime minister, it implemented radical changes in the country's political, economic, national and international policies. Nationalization of 14 major commercial banks was one of the crucial economic decisions made at that time. This movement has been extremely successful, with the geographic coverage of banks rising from 8,200 to 62,000, resulting in increased household sector economies and investments in agriculture and small and medium-sized enterprises. |
