Yoshinori Ohsumi is a Japanese cell biologist specializing in autophagy, the process used by cells to destroy and recycle cell components. Ohsumi is a professor at the Institute of Innovative Research at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He received the Kyoto Prize for Basic Science in 2012, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2016 and the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences 2017 for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy.

Yoshinori Ohsumi, a cell biologist from Japan, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on autophagy, a process that explores how cells can break down parts of their internal structures, such as proteins, and use them to energy. In addition to discovering which genes were involved in this process, Oshumi's research also showed how autophagy problems can be linked to diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, and neurological conditions such as Parkinson.
