The Diwali festival actually lasts five days, the main celebrations taking place on the third day in most places in India.

The first day (November 5, 2018) is known as Dhanteras. "Dhan" means wealth and "teras" refers to the 13th day of a lunar fortnight on the Hindu calendar. This day is dedicated to the celebration of prosperity. The goddess Lakshmi is welcomed into the house and the gold is bought. People gather to play cards and play. Ayurvedic doctors also honor Dhanvantari, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who brought Ayurveda to mankind that day. There are a number of temples in Kerala and Tamil Nadu dedicated to Dhanvantari and Ayurveda.

The second day (November 6, 2018) is known as Naraka Chaturdasi or Chhoti Diwali (Little Diwali). It is believed that Goddess Kali and Lord Krishna destroyed the Narakasura demon on this day. Demon effigies are burned in Goa in celebration.

The third day (November 7, 2018) is the day of the new moon known as Amavasya. This darkest day of the month is the most important day of the Diwali festival in northern and western India. Lakshmi is venerated that day, with a special puja in the evening. The goddess Kali is also usually worshiped that day in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam (although Kali Puja sometimes falls a day earlier according to the cycle of the moon).

The fourth day (November 8, 2018) has different meanings throughout India. In northern India, Govardhan Puja is celebrated as the day Lord Krishna defeated Indra, the god of thunder and rain. In Gujarat, it is celebrated as the beginning of a new year. In Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Lord Vishnu's victory over the Bali demon king is celebrated as Bali Pratipada or Bali Padyami.

Diwali which is also known as Deepawali is the most famous festival of the year. Diwali is the five-day holiday period that starts in Dhanteras and ends in Bhaiya Dooj. However, in Maharashtra Diwali, the festivities begin a day earlier on Govatsa Dwadashi while the festivities of Gujarat Diwali begin two days earlier on Agyaras and culminate on Labh Panchami.

Diwali (also called Lakshmi Puja, Laxmi Puja and Diwali Puja) is the Hindu Festival of Lights. It is celebrated at the end of Ashwin (September-October) and ends at the beginning of Kartika (October-November).

The main night of the Diwali festival coincides with the night of the darkest new moon of the month Lunisolar Hindi Kartika in the Bikram Sambat calendar.

Diwali Puja symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope. Diwali is one of the most popular festivals in Hindu countries.

During five feast days, various rituals are followed and with Goddess Lakshmi several other Gods and Goddesses are venerated. However goddess Lakshmi is the most significant deity during Diwali Puja. The day of the new moon, known as Amavasya, is the most significant day of the five-day Diwali festivities known as Lakshmi Puja, Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja and Diwali Puja.

Diwali Puja is not only in families but also in offices. Diwali Puja is the important day for the most traditional Hindu businessmen. That day, a bottle of ink, pens and new account books are venerated. The ink bottle and the pen, which are respectively called Davat and Lekhani are sanctified by the worship of the goddess Maha Kali. The new account books, which are called Bahi-khat are sanctified by worshiping the goddess Saraswati on them.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most famous festivals in India and people participate with great enthusiasm. The festival usually falls in October each year and this year is November 7th.

Also known as Deepawali, the festival is observed nationwide in the fall season. The main festive night usually coincides with the lunar month of Kartika in the Bikram Sambat calendar. According to the "Gregorian calendar", the night of Diwali is between mid-October and mid-November.


The celebrations start with Dhanteras, followed by "Narak Chaturdasi" on the second day, Deepawali on the third day, "Diwali Padwa", dedicated to the wedding, the fourth day and all ends with "Bhai Dooj", dedicated to the brother-sister link the fifth day.


A few days before Diwali, people are cleaning their homes and workplaces, and on festival day they decorate their homes with lights and candles.
The goddess Lakshmi is venerated that day as devotees offer prayers to the goddess of wealth for material abundance and prosperity. Later, fireworks are performed, followed by candy supply and the exchange of gifts between families, friends and relatives.


In the night of Diwali, the Jains celebrate the fulfillment of salvation by Lord Mahavira, while the 'Bandi Chhor Diwas' is celebrated among the Sikhs to mark the release of Guru Hargobind Singh from a Mughal emperor. A majority of Buddhists celebrate Diwali by worshiping Laxmi.
