Rakesh Sharma Biography & Biodata

Rakesh Sharma was born on January 13, 1949 in Patiala, Punjab. He was a squadron leader with the Indian Air Force, when he flew into space in 1984 as part of a joint program between the Indian Space Research Organization and the Soviet space program Intercosmos. He spent eight days in space aboard the Salyut 7 space station. He joined two other Soviet cosmonauts aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft which took off on 2 April 1984. He received the Hero of Soviet Award Union on his return from space. The government of India honored him with Ashok Chakra. He retired with the rank of Wing Commander.

Rakesh Sharma Career

Rakesh Sharma in 1970, after joining the Indian Air Force as a test pilot, his passion for flying gave him many opportunities, including participating in war operations against Pakistan. He flew various Mikoyan-Gurevich aircraft from 1971. Rakesh quickly advanced through several levels and in 1984 he was appointed squadron leader and pilot of the Indian Air Force. After a few years, he was invited to go on an extraordinary mission as a combined space program between the Indian Space Research Organization and the Soviet Intercosmos. He spent eight days circling Earth's orbit in a space station called Salyut 7.
