| Parkash Singh Badal was born on December 8, 1927 in Abul Khurana, a village near Malout in the Firozpur district of Punjab. He was born into a family of farmers who owned the Dhillon clan. He is the son of Late Sardar Raghuraaj Dhillon and Sundri Dhillon. Parkash Singh Badal graduated from the former Christian College of Lahore. He married Surinder Kaur in 1959 and the couple had two children, son Sukhbir Singh Badal and daughter Parneet Kaur. Surinder Kaur died in 2011 because of cancer. |

| Parkash Singh Badal into politics began in the year 1947 when he was elected the head of his village. He eventually became the Sarpanch of the village Badal and president of the Block Samiti in Lambi. He was elected to Punjab Vidhan Sabha for the first time in 1957 on the Congress ticket. He left the Congress because of differences with the chief minister of the Punjab era and joined the Shiromani Akali Dal.Badal left his office after facing defeat in the 1967 Assembly elections. He was re-elected in 1969 and joined the SAD-led government in Punjab. A year later, he became the chief minister of the state, but his term lasted only a year because of infighting within the party and the dissolution of the government. Badal was re-elected to the legislature of Punjab continuously from 1969 to 2012 with the year 1992 being the only exception since his party boycotted state elections that year. |
