| Irom Chanu Sharmila, known as "Iron Lady of India" or "Mengoubi", was born on March 14, 1972. Irom was born and raised in Manipur, one of the seven sister states of the northeastern region of India. The place has suffered a lot of insurrection for years. Irom is a civil law activist, and is famous for the 16-year hunger strike. She is a strong woman and she is hungry for 16 years without food or water, fighting for the rights of the people. |

| Irom Sharmila is a civil rights activist and watched her hunger strike when she was only 28 years old. She fasted for 16 years, the longest fast in world history. She broke it on August 9, 2016 in her hometown of Manipur. She decided to fast to protest against AFSPA in the year 200, when the Malom massacre took place. To protest, Irom began fasting on November 5 and decided not to drink or eat. She was arrested just three days after her strike and was charged with a suicide case. Sharmila was arrested and released several times during her strike period. |
