Manmohan Singh Biography & Biodata | ||
Manmohan was born on September 26, 1932 in Gah, Punjab, British India, Gurmukh Singh and his wife, Amrit Kaur. He lost his mother at a young age and was raised by his grandmother. He received his first education from Hindu College, Amritsar, where his family emigrated after the partition of India. Then he was enrolled at Punjab University, first in Chandigarh then Hoshiarpur. He received his BA in Economics in 1952 and his MA in 1954. Then, as a student at St. John's College, he studied at Cambridge University and graduated in 1957. In 1962 he graduated D.Phil. in economics at Nuffield College, Oxford University. |
Manmohan Singh Career | ||
From 1966 to 1969, he worked for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. From 1969 to 1971, he worked as a professor of international trade at the Delhi School of Economics. In 1972, he was appointed Senior Economic Advisor for the department. In 1976, he became secretary at the Ministry of Finance. He was director of the Reserve Bank of India from 1976 to 1980. From 1980 to 1982, he worked for the Planning Commission of India. He was Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985. In 1985, he was appointed Vice President of the Planning Commission of India, a position he held until 1987. From 1987 to 1990 He has served as secretary general of the South Commission, an independent economic think-tank based in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1990, he became Economic Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister after returning to India. In 1991, he became President of the Commission on University Grants. (UGC). In 1991, Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao appointed him Finance Minister of India in his government - a Singh post held until 1996. |
