Balbir Singh Biography & Biodata | ||
Balbir Singh Dosanjh was born on October 19, 1924 in Haripur Khalsa, Punjab, and was educated at Dev Samag Moga High School, D M Middle School, and Khalsa Colege Amritsar. Balbir began playing hockey at an early age, and was deeply inspired by the 1936 Indian Games gold medal hockey team of the Berlin Olympics. He first played for his Sikh National College team in Lahore, but Khalsa College Amritsar coach Harbail Singh persuaded him to transfer to Khalsa College Amritsar. Subsequently, he moved to Khalsa College in 1942 and began training and practicing under Harbail. |

Balbir Singh made his Olympic debut at the 1948 London Olympics in the second game against Argentina. India won the match 9-1, and Balbir scored 6 goals including a hat-trick. In the final match against Great Britain, India beat the opponent by 4-0, and Balbir scored 2 goals in the match. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Balbir was named vice-captain of the Indian team, with K.D. Singh Babu as captain. In the semifinal match against Great Britain, Balbir scored all 3 goals and the team won by 3-1. In the last game against the Netherlands, the Indian team won 6-1, and Balbir contributed 5 goals, including a hat trick. At the Olympic Games in Helsinki, he scored a total of 9 goals. Balbir was captain of the Indian hockey team at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, and scored 5 goals in the opening match against Afghanistan. Unfortunately, he was injured during the match and could not play before the semifinals and finals. |
